HOW AN IDEA BECAME SPORTS INNOVATION: The Story of CORESHORTS™

Sarina Fazan interviews the team behind CORESHORTS™, a medical-grade compression garment for professional athletes or any person who requires improved stability and motion control assistance, and learns how a simple idea to end pain lead to industry innovation.

Nationally renowned Sports Physiotherapist Greg Bay is the co-founder and innovator of the company.

As a team therapist for Canada’s National Men’s Soccer Team, Greg was frustrated that there were no tools on the market to help him effectively treat low back, pelvis, hip, and groin injuries for players and patients in his private practice. He says the idea for a new compression garment to provide core stabilization came to him in a “Hallelujah moment.”

“One night I woke up and said, CORESHORTS™, that’s it. They are shorts for the core,” Greg remembers.

Years later, Greg met Ed Georgica on the set of the “Miracle,” a 2004 American sports film about the United States men's ice hockey team. Greg was a medical expert on the movie and Ed served as a sports consultant. Greg shared his idea for CORESHORTS™ and Ed realized he had to be part of the team to bring this innovation to the market.

Ed says, “He loved the idea because he knew there was a need. I knew there was a need. From a physiotherapist there was a need. But, no one was doing it. So, what do you do? You go and build it.”

Ed, who is the Head of Operations for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, also is an entrepreneurial sports leader with a passion for bringing innovative products and ideas to life. Having worked with manufacturers on the research and development of products for both professional and retail markets, he had one more person in mind for the team - former hockey player Claude Gagnon.

“Ed called me and said, ‘Claude, what do you of this?’ I said, ‘Wow, it’s the future.’ This product, I wish I would have had it before, it’s unbelievable,” Claude explains.

In addition to 12 years as a player, Claude has experience as a sales leader in the equipment industry, working with both hockey and sports apparel companies in Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Together, this formidable team brought CORESHORTS™ to life, and three varieties of the garment are now shipped to consumers from a warehouse in Tampa, Florida.

The patented technology behind CORESHORTS™ is designed to provide localized circumferential compression to the low back and pelvis while connecting the leg to the opposite hip, just like the anatomical cross support of the core anatomy. The garment provides the only anatomically correct support system with strategically angled elastics made to specific tension specifications for optimal motion control.

Greg says, “We didn’t create the anatomy, but we certainly mimicked it in a garment that then acts and behaves like your own human anatomy does.”

It’s a premium product with a pivotal message from three men determined to find a solution to injuries and end pain.

“Without a doubt, it’s not the other way around. This isn’t made and created to make money. This is made and created to make a difference in people’s lives,” Greg states.
