BOOK REVIEW: “Small Great Things”
I love to read. My mom said as a little girl, I would battle bed time because I wanted to continue reading. In fact, even using a flashlight under the covers long after my parents turned off the lights.
I share that story because it has been a long time since I have actually read a book twice. That was the case with this one, Jodi Picoult’s “Small Great Things.” She wrote it several years ago. But, it was the first book I have read by her, which is surprising because through the years, so many have recommended this author.
It is fantastic! Picoult weaves a tale that will leave you questioning race and equality. The story grips you from the beginning with the introduction of Ruth, an African-American nurse who excels at her job. But then, Ruth faces the unthinkable. She is charged with murder after the death of a white supremacist’s newborn.
I was engrossed in the story so much so I had to read even more about it after I finished the novel the first time. I grew even more enthralled when I read Picoult also wanted to write a book about race relations but never could find the right story until she heard about a case out of Flint, Michigan.
I am not surprised the novel was on the New York Times best selling list, won numerous awards and is now a teaching tool on social injustice.
If you don’t have time to read but are on the road, I would highly suggest the audio version. It is read by Audra McDonald, Ari Fliakos and Cassandra Campbell. Their voices perfectly capture these characters.
